| The Basic Tutor Training |
|
| The Literacy Network offers a Basic Tutor Training Class that serves as a foundation for individuals interested in becoming literacy tutors for adults. This class is held one Saturday each month from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and covers topics ranging from characteristics of adult learners to goal setting and lesson planning. The class is held at 19 Broadcast Plaza in Queensgate at the Literacy Network offices. Trainers are experienced teachers who specialize in adult basic education. |

| The Learning Disabilities Training |
|
| The Literacy Network offers a Learning Disabilities Training Class that provides basic instruction for teaching adults with learning disabilities. The class focuses on types, causes, and early warning signs of learning disabilities. Techniques and tools to overcome learning disabilities are then discussed. Additionally, management strategies and behavioral issues are covered. Offered as needed, this four-hour training is held at the Literacy Network office in Queensgate or as requested at off-site locations. |

| The English for Speakers of Other Languages Training |
|
| The Literacy Network offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Training for those interested in teaching English to adult refugees or immigrants. The class covers topics such as current trends in teaching ESOL, how adults differ from children in language acquisition, and the use of social language and its effect on language learning. Available online resources also are discussed. This four-hour training, offered twice a year, is held at the Literacy Network office in Queensgate or at an off-site location. |

| The Commitment |

The time commitment varies depending upon your availability and the student's needs. In a one-on-one tutoring arrangement, consistency is the key to the student's success.
A tutor's commitment should be at least one hour per week. If your schedule does not permit you to keep a regular time commitment with a learner, you can always help teachers in the GED classrooms at most of our agencies. The goal is to provide adult learners with as much individual attention and support as possible.
